Episode 60: Casual Acquaintances

  • Jun. 2nd, 2008 at 8:31 AM
wiids
Well, we made it. Our 60th episode is now online, no thanks to the problems we had when rounding up the hosts, sending the files and - of course - putting the damn thing together. I'd like to call for a huge round of applause for the hosts, who coped admirably in my absence because I was trapped in London by both an impending deadline and a poor excuse for train service.

They've managed to put together a fantastic episode - once I removed all the mistakes.
And the random off-air banter.
And the ten minutes of fussing over whether or not Dippy's computer was going to spontaneously combust.
And Mani singing (as per).

Enjoy!

Just to spite me, Dippy uploads the episode a whole day before the usual release date! And, maliciously, Jack 'cronogenesis/the jumpman' Smith has done the shownotes. I can't turn my back for a second - he'll be after my job next!

NEWS: No Nintendo At Leipzig 2008

  • May. 23rd, 2008 at 1:17 PM
james
Apparently not. According to Kotaku and a German press release I wouldn't dare attempt to translate, Nintendo will not be attending this year's Games Convention in Leipzig.

The reason? They've had so much success with both public and press only roadshows and events, which have "let to many positive experiences", they're going to focus on those instead after E3.

However, Nintendo Germany's Dr Bern Fakesch has assured the company's followers that this only applies to the 2008 Games Convention. Nintendo will re-evaluate whether or not to attend GC2009 at a later date.

On a more personal note, I'm rather gutted because my boss has just booked my tickets to Leipzig!

Our close friend on the WiiDS - Cronogenesis has become quite excited at the thought of a sequel to Michel Ancels incredible yet criminally overlooked masterpiece Beyond Good and Evil. Find out what he has to say after the jump.

Jumpman In Minus World: Beyond Good & Evil 2

Once you have read his views and one we very much share here on WiiDS - Take a second to sign this petition - and get this title from pre production to store shelves - and into your beloved game collection - all you have to do is sign your name on the petition below.

http://www.petitiononline.com/bgaep/petition.html

It's simple. You have the power to make this happen - so use it! Thanks to Cronogenesis for informing us of the news, continuing to make his blog pages a damn good read!, his support for bringing this game to fruition and giving the game and Michel Ancel a chance to get the recognition that they deserve! Also a huge thanks to the ongoing efforts at BGE2 Revolution

And a final thank you to you guys,
the listeners and readers who I just know are going to make this happen. Don't let this one slip away. If you have not had a chance to play the original then seek it down on consoles on auction sites and bargain bins around the country. Those who live in the U.S can pick the game up on PC through Steam for $8 - Its only $8. Americans can also get it for FREE by becoming a Gold member on Gametap for 99 cents!

http://www.gametap.com/play/gameDetails/000278650

so why not take a look eh? You WILL be pleasantly surprised.

Viva la Revolution!

Episode 58: The Rare Necessities

DOWNLOAD HERE

We've got a very heated episode for you this week, but don't worry - it's all in good fun. Originally the plan was to discuss Rare and all of its games, but we became a little too focused on a certain bear and bird duo, with the team divided about how their third outing will fair. However, no matter of civilised debating can defeat an Almighty Jason Monologue...

Having trouble embedding. Apologies - will try tomrrow - If I can stop watching the damn thing!!! Now thats how you make a trailer.

EDIT: Aha! Now it's working, so you have no excuse not to check out this awesome trailer of the best upcoming FPS on Wii!

IMPORTANT: Episode 57 fixed!

Anyone who downloaded the first version of episode 57 might have wondered why all the sound was only coming out of the left earpiece/speaker/whatever. It was entirely James' fault (you can't trust that boy with anything, can you?) but I've spent the best part of my evening putting it right. The replacement is now up and ready for your listening pleasure.

Those who downloaded the mono version might like to download this again, not only to listen to the podcast in stereo but also for a little Easter Egg especially for James

Enjoy!

VIDEO: Nintendo Channel

  • May. 8th, 2008 at 2:56 PM
tom
As our American listeners will boast, the Nintendo Channel has been released in the U.S., allowing them to access all the DS demos, reviews, videos and other digital delights that we've got to wait the best part of a month for. However, for the benefit of our European followers, here's Nintendo's only-slightly-patronising video on what the channel offers.

A Quick Apology

  • May. 6th, 2008 at 11:00 PM
james
For once, this isn't an apology about a late episode (although I am currently putting the finishing touches on Episode 56 - so that's late. Sorry). I've received a few messages about this blog, and more specifically, the handy little section at the side that links you to latest episodes. I've just updated it now, as it was (as you guys so rightly pointed out) a couple of weeks out of date, and therefore infuriating for anyone who doesn't have iTunes.

You have my apologies for this. As you might have noticed, this blog doesn't get updated as often as we'd like it to. It was originally set up as a replacement for the god-awful homepage our hosts at Libsyn set you up with, which literally lists the episodes and doesn't feature personal touches of any nature. However, we set this up before we discovered other blogging systems like WordPress, so we had to make do with Livejournal's limited features.

For example, the list of latest episodes has to be updated manually, rather than based on an RSS feed. We also don't have a podcast player, allowing you to stream the episodes from the site rather than downloading them. We are working on this, but it's something we can't fix while on Livejournal.

Behind the scenes, we're working on creating a new homepage, with a wordpress blog and podcast player. However, we can't do this until we're sure we can transfer the forum community as well (we don't want to repeat what happened last year, when we lost both the forums and a significant number of listeners!).

Please bear with us, we are trying to get this fixed. In the meantime, have a little patience with this blog, as we only get to update it in our spare time - something which I, for one, have very little of!

Episode 55 Delay

  • Apr. 27th, 2008 at 9:57 PM
james
Apologies, everyone. I've been away for a week, my time taken up by a combination of packing boxes and performing on stage. As a result, i was unable to start editing until today (about 1ish this afternoon), and have spent about four or five hours filtering the other hosts out of jason's audio feed. It sounds like it was a good episode.

Unfortunately, with this done, i now have to begin the editing process proper, and i'm rather shattered so it's slow going. As a result, there won't be an episode released tonight or tomorrow. I won't be able to edit tomorrow evening, as I have a work event to attend, which means I'll be doing the bulk of the editing tuesday and wednesday evening.

Hopefully, ep 55 will be complete by thursday morning. Apologies for the severe delay, and keep an eye out in case i get the episode up early.

IMAGE: Snap of the Week!

  • Apr. 18th, 2008 at 7:58 PM
Mani
This weeks snap of the week is doubly great - as first of all its an awesome picture in its own right and two it completely unintentionally parodies the intro movie sequence of a game that is very dear to my heart. Thanks to Petey Pie for triggering off a nostalgic trip back through God of Wars finest moments for me - via youtube and Gerard K. Marino's superb epic and ferocious soundtrack. The screen Petey has captured is humorous as it looks to insinuate that Falco does not seem to be happy with his role in the Star Fox universe. He is suave, oozes ICE cool and in my opinion deserves his own game! Frankly, if this is how Falco is going to deal with the limelight that Fox Mcloud has hogged all these years than I would be very interested to see how Slippy copes with it. Actually If he wants to drop me an email Im sure I can help him with his problem...Now where did I put my shotgun?

This is just incredible. Some chaps with a remote control car, metal stick, a couple of crates of wine and far too much time on their hands have recreated the Mario theme tune perfectly. Perfectly. It's hard to know which is more impressive - how they managed to get each note right, how they managed to get the timing right, or how they are still standing after drinking that much wine!

Watch and enjoy!

In the ongoing education of Tom, Episode 54 brought up the subject of why Boom Blox, the physics-based puzzle game brought to you by EA and Steven Spielerg (of all people!), looks so fun. So here, in this trailer, is why it will be one to watch:

While we're on the subject, there were rumours (recently dismissed) that Boom Blox would feature headtracking. I've only just discovered what this is myself, so for those not in the know:
